Hollow Girl Scout Camp
Go camping! Explore
the outdoors! Enjoy environmental programs
and other fun programs with your troop or
other girls your age!
Jockey Hollow Girl Scout
Camp, which sits on 212 acres in Mendham Township,
is the setting for day camp in summer, fun
weekend environmental and outdoor programs
in the spring and fall and troop camping throughout
the year. All of these fun opportunities await
girls this spring after a $4 million camp
improvement project is completed.
In addition to the existing
facilities, new features at camp will be:
- A
new swimming pool for beginner to advanced
swimmers
- A shower house
- A large activity
shelter
- A troop house for
overnight camping that sleeps 40
- Six troop cabins
that each sleep 16 campers
- Six smaller activity
shelters
- Challenge Course
Old Cabin, Wafer Hill
and Fingarr Lodge are also used by girls for
environmental programs, camping and other
outdoor adventures. Old Cabin, built in 1934
by the Rotary Club of Morristown, stands at
the center of activity at Jockey Hollow Day
Camp. Fingarr Lodge was built in 1964 to provide
more camping opportunities for girls. Adirondack
shelters, built in 1966 and 1972, are a fun
spot for girls to gather and camp in warmer
months.
The Challenge Course,
made of wire, rope and wood is a fun way for
troops to learn about teamwork, physical fitness
and self-confidence.
The first camp opened
in 1929 when Jockey Hollow Club granted the
council permission to hold camp at Jockey
Hollow. That year, for 10 weeks, 47 girls
attended two days a week. The girls’
activities included hiking, camping, outdoor
cooking and working on skills and proficiency
badges including Pioneer and First Aid.
Camp activities at Jockey
Hollow Day Camp are still very much like those
when the camp first opened. The girls enjoy
camping, outdoor cooking, and hiking with
the addition of swimming, the Challenge Course
and horseback riding.
